Some Thoughts on Wizard Rock: ?

Sometimes I consider Wizard Rock almost a guilty pleasure. Sometimes I keep it off playlists so that certain friends won’t hear it and think I’m a weirdo.

But I’ve been thinking about it lately, and I’ve come to a few realizations.

People have a tendency to think of fandom music as somehow less legitimate than real music. Even if you like Wrock, you make sure to introduce your friends to the more technically adept acts like Oliver Boyd and the Remembralls instead of starting with Draco and the Malfoys.

Wizard Rock definitely has it’s weaknesses. The vocalists aren’t always top notch. The melodies and musicality are pretty simple sometimes. But so what if it’s not technically top notch. So what if the lyrics are a little simple or silly sometimes. Maybe those aren’t weaknesses at all. If people aren’t coming to Wizard Rock for the skill or the sound, maybe they’re coming for something else entirely, the community.

There are a handful of “normal” rock bands known for super tight knit and reliable communities, but nearly every Wizard Rock band can fill a room any day of the week. That community isn’t something you can learn. It’s not something that you can gather because you play a kickass solo.

I’m not sorry that I listen to Wizard Rock. I’m not going to be embarrassed to play it in front of my friends or even the whole world any longer.

There is some crazy level of skill in being able to sing The Weapon and have everyone sing along to a pretty simple song and know it and love it. It takes something special to lock an insane amount of feeling into a singalong of When The Lights Go Out, to keep thousands of people singing well after you’ve left the stage. There’s insane power in saying something as simple as “It’s real for us” and meaning so, so much more.

Wizard Rock might not sound as great as what’s on the radio, but there is so much more than just the music there, and that’s something that feels and sounds pretty awesome.
